Recently, I accompanied an electrician friend of mine during the installation of an electric vehicles ev charger station. This was installed in the garage of a single-family home in Mönchengladbach. Installation of the “Heidelberg Home Eco wallbox” was carried out by trained fitters from the electrical company “Elektro Leven”.
The customer requested the installation of the wall charging station in the entrance area of the garage. So then he is able to charge the vehicle not only in the garage, but also in the driveway area. The NYY-J 5x6mm2 pipe was laid a few meters through the garden inside the conduit. Then it was led into the basement to the main power source of the apartment building. To strip the NYY cable at the ev charging station and at the power source, the JOKARI Cable Knife System 4-70 was used. Thanks to the new ergonomic handle of the cable knife, this process could be carried out quickly and safely.
During the subsequent stripping of the single wires, a fast and clean result could be achieved with the automatic wire stripper JOKARI Super 4 Pro. Using crimping pliers from Knipex, ferrules were crimped on, which simplified the connection to the three-pole intermediate meter.
To protect the line and “wallbox”, a three-pole RCD 40A/0.03A and a three-pole circuit breaker B16A were used in the source cabinet. The installation of the “wallbox” took approximately five hours.
Interesting facts about ev home chargers
A “wallbox” (wall charging station) offers maximum safety and usually a higher charging power than a household outlet. Instead of only 2.3 kW, up to 22 kW are possible, although the “wallbox” used only allows a maximum of 11 kW. The choice of “wallbox” models on the market is now huge. In addition to the charging function, there are many other tasks that a “wallbox” can fulfill. It offers protection against fault currents and overloads as well as energy load management in general.
It is important to have the proper installation point of the “wallbox”. For example, it makes a difference whether the electric car can only be charged in your garage, or if it possible to charge in the driveway as well. Accessibility is important depending on your access to your parked car. Considerations should be taken if the car is parked in a carport, underground parking, or in a rental housing complex. The charging process should be protected by an authorization function, to avoid any unauthorized use. “Wallboxes” offer an extremely convenient source of power but require proper attention when installing.
Avoid frustration and annoyance: Have installation carried out by a specialist company
When installing a “wallbox”, there are a few things to check and consider in advance before it is installed and connected to the existing power grid. There are special safety requirements for the charging stations, which are defined in a VDE standard. In addition, the energy supplier usually must be informed or even asked for approval. At this point, we expressly recommend that the installation and installation of a “wallbox” be carried out by a qualified specialist. They know the requirements, can provide adequate advice and ensure that the smart technology then runs reliably and safely as desired.
