A cable break can happen quickly and is often annoying. Whether it is a drilled cable, a damaged power cable or defective cable insulation – with the right tricks the problem can usually be fixed quickly. In this article we show how a knowledge person can repair a cable break.
Where does a cable break?
A cable or line often breaks in places where it has been permanently exposed to excessive mechanical stress. Excessive bending or kinking can also have a negative effect on the quality of the line. A classic case is cutting the line, for example when mowing the lawn. Regular use and wear and tear on a cable can also lead to damage. Incorrect handling such as improper storage or transport, such as rolling up cables tightly, can also result in breakages.
The long-term consequence of this is the cutting of the metal or fiber optic cable, which interrupts the electrical or optical connection.
Tips: How to safely repair a damaged power cable
Step 1: Locate the point where the cable is broken or damaged.
Step 2: Disconnect the power supply from the cable.
Step 3: Cut out the affected area of the cable with a straight cut, making sure that the wires are cut evenly.
Step 4: Remove the outer insulation with a stripper, such as the Secura No. 15 (item no. 30155).
Step 5: Strip the exposed wires with wire strippers. The JOKARI Super 4 Pro (item no. 20200) or the Secura 2K (item no. 20100) are a good choice here.
ATTENTION! When using a simple cutter knife, it often happens that you cut too deeply and damage the inner wires. This could later cause a short circuit or another cable break at this point.
Step 6: Push the shrink tubing over the stripped wires so that you can then pull it over the connections. 7th step: Connect the individual wires using single-pole connecting terminals. Plug each wire into the corresponding wire of the same color on the other side of the connector.
TIP: With a NYM-J 5×1.5mm2, for example, make sure that the two black wires are not mixed up. A helpful trick is to find the individual wire that is connected between the blue and the green-yellow wire and start with that.
Step 8: Slide the shrink tubing over the connection point.
Step 9: Finally, the shrink tubing is heated and shrunk with a hot air blower.
When carrying out all steps, the five safety rules should always be observed!
